Here we have a length of lace trim with light blue flowers, made by Gustav Schnitzler. It’s displayed on a piece of card, which helps give it a kind of formal presence. The lace is so delicate, such intricate work, it's easy to imagine the maker hunched over it, carefully threading and knotting. It makes you think about time, doesn't it? About patience, about the loving labor that goes into making something beautiful, even if it's "just" a trim for a dress. And the colors, those faded blues and creams, they're so gentle, so soothing. It reminds me of some of Agnes Martin's grids, with their quiet, meditative quality. It's like a whisper, a secret language spoken through thread and color. You could imagine this trim being used to embellish all sorts of outfits and decor, but here it is, presented as a work of art in itself, a testament to the power of simple beauty.
