This white lace, decorated with interconnected ovals, was made by Gustav Schnitzler and kept on a piece of cardboard. When I look at the image I imagine Schnitzler carefully placing the lace on the cardboard, gently wrapping it around to keep it neat. I’m thinking about the intricate work and detail that must have gone into creating this lace, the material, the touch, and the process of making. You know, lace is a beautiful and delicate art form, so tactile. There is something about the repeated oval shapes connected together that reminds me of the chain of art history, like one artist leads to another, one idea builds upon the previous one. Like Schnitzler, artists today are equally inspired by what came before them. When they’re good, they’re also innovating and inventing. And the lace becomes something new.
