This delicate study in blue by Gustav Schnitzler is an artwork created using paper, textile and ink. I'm wondering about the artist making this. What was he thinking? It looks like he was playing with the simple elegance of lace with its alternation of circles and flowers. The rhythm is satisfying; it’s a bit like a musical score. A repeated motif can be so compelling. I love the contrast between the ephemerality of the lace and the sturdiness of the cardboard support. It’s a reminder of the tension between fragility and resilience that’s often present in artmaking. And then there is the writing on the cardboard in black ink. Is that a note? The artist’s thought process revealed as part of the work. It makes me think about all the other artists who’ve been inspired by textiles and lace: the way texture and pattern can create such compelling visual experiences. Every stitch is a gesture and every artist stands on the shoulders of another. Art is an ongoing conversation.
