This is Gustav Schnitzler’s ‘Tussenzetsel van wit kant met aaneengeregen wielen op karton’, a length of white lace, mounted on cardboard. It's amazing how such simple material, lace, can be transformed into something so visually arresting. I’m really drawn to the texture, the delicate, almost fragile quality of the lace against the sturdy cardboard. The color palette is very limited - just shades of white and cream - but it's used to great effect. The repetitive pattern of the lace is mesmerizing, drawing me in. Notice how the circles form a kind of rhythm, broken only where the lace ends. The cardboard itself becomes part of the artwork, it’s edges torn and marked with annotations. It reminds me a little of a Cy Twombly painting, where writing and mark making are integral to the overall composition. With both, it is like an ongoing conversation between materials, between the artist and their work. It doesn't try to be perfect or complete, but embraces the beauty of the unfinished.
