Curatorial notes
This fashion plate, from May 1929, is anonymous and was made with a printing press. There is a really intriguing approach to color here; the off-whites and yellows of the dresses and backgrounds are interrupted by a pale blue which gives the piece a subtle yet striking visual harmony. The magic really happens in the details. Look at the textures suggested, almost like lace and embroidery, created with such simple techniques. See the small dots and dashes? They feel hastily applied, yet together they build up the image of the material and the forms of the figures. It's like the artist is showing us the bones of the artwork. This piece reminds me a lot of Sonia Delaunay; both artists explore the intersection of art and design. This work embraces ambiguity, inviting us to find our own meaning within it.
