Horacio Garcia-Rossi, born in Argentina and later exiled to Paris, made this piece called “Mouvement,” in which the word “movement” is repeated in a grid-like structure. Garcia-Rossi was a key figure in the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel in Paris, which explored kinetic art and the dematerialization of the art object. In "Mouvement", the repetition of language embodies movement itself; the piece oscillates between the verbal and the visual. In this way, it asks us to consider what is lost and gained when we view language. The artwork also reflects the artist’s personal and political experiences of exile. As Garcia-Rossi stated: “Exile is neither exteriority nor interiority. It is the loss of the boundary between the two.” The concept of movement takes on a particularly poignant meaning. Ultimately, the artwork is an exploration of the complexities of identity, displacement, and the power of language to both confine and liberate.
