This is Julio Le Parc’s ‘Silver Square Mobile on Black’, and it's made of what looks like reflective squares hanging in front of a dark background. What strikes me is the way Le Parc uses these simple shapes to create something that feels so alive. The squares are not uniform. They seem to dance and catch the light differently, and this gives the piece a sense of movement, like it's breathing. The reflective surfaces of each square multiply the light and create different patterns, drawing you in. Each movement of light and shadow offers a different composition. The black background is essential here; it sets off the silver, it’s not just a backdrop but an active part of the experience. It reminds me of the work of artists like Jesús Rafael Soto, where simple materials are used to create complex visual experiences that challenge our perceptions. Like with Soto, Le Parc encourages us to see the potential for dynamism and change within simple forms.
