Bruce Pollock made this drawing, Net Pan, with graphite on paper. The act of drawing involves both careful planning and chance. In this piece, the graphite is layered with a light touch, creating a visual texture of geometric shapes. Up close, you can see the intricate lines that form the web, a bit like a honeycomb. Pollock seems to repeat a single mark which builds into a complex composition. The drawing's surface is smooth, and the pale grey allows the form to appear delicate. But it is also strong in its repetition, creating an interesting balance between detail and the whole. It reminds me of the work of Agnes Martin, another artist who finds beauty in simple forms and repetitive mark-making. What I love about Pollock's work is how it celebrates the small gestures that build into something significant, making the process as important as the final result.
