Gerhard von Graevenitz made this compelling image with simple means: black and white, squares and repetition. Looking at this, I imagine the artist starting with a very clear, perhaps even mathematical system and then deliberately messing with it. You know, like life! Each little square feels like an individual, tilting, turning, jostling for space. What was he thinking as he composed the image? Was it a meditation on order and chaos? Or a comment on society, where everyone is trying to find their own angle? What I love most about this piece is the tension between its clean geometry and the slightly off-kilter arrangement. It reminds me that art, even at its most structured, can still embrace playfulness and ambiguity. We are always in conversation with other artists through our work, and this resonates with the work of Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, and others playing with line and grid. It reminds us that in art, as in life, there is no single right way to see the world.
