This is Erte's 'Alphabet E', one of a series of stylized letters, and is a product of the Art Deco movement, which flourished between the two World Wars. Erte, born Romain de Tirtoff in Russia, was a prominent figure in this era. Erte's work often embodies a sense of theatricality, and 'Alphabet E' is no exception. Two winged figures are stacked one atop the other to form the spine of the letter "E". Their androgynous features challenge conventional gender norms, while their flowing robes evoke a sense of classical grace. This aesthetic was especially popular during a period of significant social change, as gender roles were being questioned and redefined. The delicate lines and decorative details reflect the era's fascination with luxury and sophistication. 'Alphabet E' evokes a dreamlike quality, inviting us to consider the power of symbols and their ability to reflect societal ideals and aspirations. The cloudlike base and angelic figures give a sense of ethereality and weightlessness, which invites us to question the boundaries of material form and gender.
