Jan Groth made this drawing, 'Tegning', with graphite or charcoal, and it's all about the gesture, like a dance between the hand and the paper. There's something really raw about the mark-making, those lines aren't trying to be perfect. They're kind of wobbly and broken, which I find super interesting. You can almost feel the artist’s hand moving, the pressure and release as they create this arch. It’s not just about what it looks like, but how it was made, you know? I love the way the texture of the paper comes through, making the darks pop out. Look closely and you can see how each stroke varies, some are bold, others are soft and faded. It reminds me of some of Brice Marden’s drawings, where it’s all about the line and its presence. It’s like Groth is saying, “Hey, this is a drawing, and it’s okay if it’s not perfect.” Art is a conversation, right? It's never just about one thing.
