Editor: Here we have "Vijf foto's van een vakantie in Noordwijk", taken sometime between 1911 and 1918 by Carolina Frederika Onnen. They're albumen prints, so they have this lovely warm, sepia tone. The photos look like snapshots from a family trip to the beach, capturing these little intimate moments, almost like time capsules. What do you notice in these photographs? Curator: Oh, absolutely. This isn't just visual documentation; it's a fragment of a life lived. These aren't posed portraits in a studio, these are captured breaths. The slightly faded albumen prints somehow make these lives more palpable. It is as though the images allow a century of sea breeze to rustle through the frame, reaching us here and now. Do you get the sense, looking at this almost a century later, of a family story, even a story for the future? Editor: Definitely! Especially because the photographs include names or captions! What do you think the image including "Carla Ulohr" is intended to suggest? Curator: The naming brings it all into stark reality for me. Carolina Onnen not only captured Carla Ulohr’s image but froze a specific, unnamed moment of their interaction together for the remainder of human time. Knowing Carla's name and Carolina's touch creates an inescapable intimacy that seems quite remarkable. These photographs create that same feeling for each of the individuals who were pictured, like ghosts that remind us to cherish all that we experience in life. Editor: This has provided a lot to contemplate. Thank you for sharing these remarkable and unique perspectives! Curator: My pleasure. It's art like this that reminds me why I do what I do. Every piece holds stories waiting to be rediscovered, retold and reinterpreted, for future generations.
