This is a page from Carolina Onnen’s photo album. It contains seven snapshots of Loentje, Willy, Winny Uhlenbeck, and other friends, taken around 1910, probably with a simple camera. These are casual pictures of people with tennis rackets. I love how the sepia tones create a soft, dreamy effect, almost like a faded memory. Look at the way the figures are arranged. They appear to be captured in unposed moments, giving a sense of spontaneity. The texture of the photographic paper and the way the images are pasted onto the page add a tactile quality. You can almost feel the artist’s hand in the arrangement. The snapshots remind me a little of the photo collages of David Hockney, who also plays with different perspectives and ways of seeing. Both artists capture a sense of time and place, inviting us to piece together the narrative. Art is about making connections, finding echoes across time and between different sensibilities.
