Dimensions Sheet: 5 7/8 × 8 1/16 in. (15 × 20.4 cm)
This small patterned sheet, of unknown date, uses humble materials to great effect. Notice the simple floral designs, rendered in blue and orange on what appears to be laid paper. The pattern was likely made using woodblocks, a relatively simple form of printmaking that allowed for the creation of repeating motifs. The consistency of the lines and shapes suggests a practiced hand. The process would have involved carving the desired pattern into a block of wood, inking it, and then pressing it onto the paper. The repetitive nature of block printing made it ideal for textile production, allowing for the relatively quick and inexpensive creation of patterned fabrics. This sheet, then, speaks to a broader history of textile design and production and the importance of accessible materials and techniques in everyday life. It challenges the traditional distinction between art and craft.
