This silver medal, created by Gasparo Morone between 1655 and 1667, depicts Pope Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi) in profile. The inscription around the edge, “VATICAN TEMPLI AREA PORTICIBUS ORNATA ALEX VII P.M,” celebrates the Pope's commissioning of the colonnade surrounding St. Peter's Square. The medal, now part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection in New York, exemplifies the use of Renaissance-inspired medallic art to commemorate historical events.
