Carmelo Arden Quin made this rhythmic construction out of painted wood. I love how the shapes come together, how the blacks and whites play off each other. You can almost see the artist in their studio, shuffling these forms around, trying to find a balance, a harmony. What if that triangle went there? Or maybe this bar could slide over here? It's like he's composing a piece of music, working with a visual language of geometry and tone. The surface looks smooth, controlled, but I bet there were plenty of decisions along the way. The simple forms remind me of the Bauhaus, but also of folk art, like handmade toys. It's got this playful, experimental vibe. Artists are always in conversation with one another across time. Ultimately, this work invites us to play, too, to see the world as a set of possibilities, and maybe even rearrange things a little.
