This is an untitled painting by Bruno Munari, we don't know when it was made or with what, but imagine the crisp lines of black and white emerging, shifting through trial, error and intuition. Looking at this work, I sympathize with Munari. I imagine him thinking about how different forms of painting offer ways of experiencing the world. The black diamond is bisected by a grey line, almost like a staircase, or a maze that is never quite resolved. This brings me to the surface and the physicality of the medium. The paint is thin, not thick, yet this shapes our experience and its emotional resonance. This piece relates to other painters who are inspired by geometry and form. Artists are in conversation with each other across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. And, as an expression of his imagination, Munari embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
