Curator: Here we have Victor Pasmore's "Linear Motif in Black and White," currently held in the Tate Collections. I find its stark simplicity quite arresting. Editor: It's so minimal, almost austere. It feels less like a complete artwork and more like a diagram or a sketch. Curator: Pasmore transitioned into abstraction after initially embracing realism, influenced by artists like Mondrian. This work showcases that shift. Editor: It's fascinating to see how he reduces form to its bare essence. It's like he is distilling something incredibly complex to these simple lines and shapes. Curator: Exactly, and it speaks to the broader shift in art history where artists wanted to move beyond the representational. It’s a statement of artistic freedom. Editor: I’m still struck by the lack of overt emotion. Perhaps its emotional impact is in the restraint, which is something I can definitely appreciate. Curator: Yes, its unemotional quality can be confronting, but also offers a contemplative space, wouldn’t you agree? Editor: Absolutely.

This is one of a series of compositions begun in 1959, combining fine lines and broader bands of colour on irregularly shaped raised grounds. Linear Motif in Black and White would appear to develop the idea of movement, with the projected relief adding an extra spatial ambiguity. In such works Pasmore explored the theme of movement and growth, which had first appeared in his work in the 1940s, through the use of line to create a sense of organic flow. Gallery label, July 2013
