Samuel Buri made 'La vue de Pierre Bonnard', and it's all about how we see, and what we choose to see. The painting is divided into quadrants, each a kind of window onto a Bonnard-esque view. Buri isn't trying to trick us with illusionism. Instead, he lays bare the artifice, juxtaposing flat blocks of color, patterns and loose renderings of landscape. There's a tension between abstraction and representation, control and spontaneity, that gives the work a real energy. I love the way Buri uses color. It's so intuitive. Like in the top right, the way the red stars push against the violet. It's a bit jarring, but also kind of thrilling. And that yellow edging around the borders! It reminds me of outsider art. Buri invites us to question our own ways of seeing. It’s a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, always open to new interpretations.
