Samuel Buri made this untitled painting, likely sometime in 1984, using a vibrant array of colours and shapes. The way Buri approaches painting feels like a playful experiment, each mark contributing to a lively dance across the surface. Looking closely, you can see how Buri builds up the painting with layers of colour. The paint isn't overly thick, but you can sense the physicality of the brushstrokes, each one a deliberate gesture. Notice the clusters of shapes in the bottom right corner. They feel spontaneous, almost as if Buri was letting the colours and forms guide the way. It's like a garden bursting with life, each shape a different flower or leaf, overlapping and intertwining. Buri's work reminds me a little of Matisse's cut-outs, that same sense of joyful experimentation. Art is like a conversation, isn’t it? This painting is an invitation to join in, to let our eyes wander and our imaginations bloom.
