Samuel Buri made this untitled painting with bold shapes and a garden of colour, probably around 1984. It looks like Buri built this thing up like a wall of pure sensation. I can imagine him standing in front of the canvas, armed with brushes and pots of delicious bright paint, building the surface bit by bit. The greens, yellows, reds and blues seem to vibrate against each other. It's all in motion, like a meadow exploding with life. You get the sense of all the elements dancing together. What I love about painting is how each little gesture can communicate so much. There is so much experimentation happening here, like he's in conversation with artists such as Matisse, Léger, or even Miró. They're all part of the same story, you know? I hope he felt the joy and freedom of the thing coming alive. What a beautiful, spirited work.
