Curatorial notes

This is a text sheet made in 1558 by Christoffel Plantijn, describing the funeral procession of Emperor Charles V. Note the floral motifs intertwining with heraldic shields, a visual echo of intertwined life and lineage. These elements remind me of similar decorations in Roman triumphal arches, where laurel wreaths symbolize victory and eternal memory. Notice the cherubic figures at the top, evoking a sense of divine mourning, their presence links back to ancient depictions of Cupid and Psyche, where love and the soul are eternal. These symbols have traveled through time, appearing in funerary art across cultures, from ancient Roman sarcophagi to Renaissance tombs. Their constant recurrence touches on our collective subconscious understanding of life, death, and remembrance. It shows the cyclical nature of cultural expression.
