Stefano della Bella created this engraving of Lodewijk XIII, whose reign over France lasted from 1610 to 1643. The print presents the King as a triumphant figure, riding in a chariot pulled by four horses. It celebrates Louis XIII’s military victories and political achievements. But it’s important to remember that this image presents a very particular view of the king, one carefully constructed to enhance his power and authority. Consider the role of Cardinal Richelieu, mentioned in the inscription. How did his influence shape Louis XIII’s reign, and whose voices were silenced in the process? As we reflect on this image of power, let’s also think about those who were excluded from it, and whose stories remain untold.
