This is the title heading of "Ude og Hjemme," a newspaper made on December 28, 1879, by F. Hendriksen. It is an example of the ubiquity of print, produced through industrial means and widely disseminated. The design is a lithograph, a form of printing that uses the resistance between grease and water, which allowed for the relatively fast reproduction of images and text. The lettering of the title is interwoven with naturalistic imagery of leaves and fronds, alluding to the publication’s focus on matters both domestic and foreign – that’s the literal meaning of the title, “Abroad and at Home.” The making of this image depended on a complex division of labor: from the paper manufacturer to the print shop workers, to the news vendors and postal carriers who distributed it. Understanding this network of production allows us to appreciate the social life of images like this one, beyond their aesthetic qualities alone.
