The “English violet” (Viola d’Amore) was created in 1726 by the German-born luthier Paulus Alletsee (1698-1738). This viola d’amore is characterized by its double set of strings. The instrument has seven playing strings, each with a sympathetic string running beneath it, which creates a richer, more resonant sound. The carved head of the instrument features the profile of a woman, a stylistic choice popular in the 18th century. This viola d'amore, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a testament to the craftsmanship of a talented luthier.
