Andrzej Nowacki made this acrylic on canvas painting, 04.03.13, and for me it’s all about lines and how they misbehave. At first glance, it looks like a set of straight lines running down the canvas, but look again. Each one has its own little wobble, its own secret. It’s that subtle wavering that really grabs my attention. There's a real push-pull thing happening. The colors, too, are not what they seem. It’s like he’s taken colors that should clash and somehow made them sing together. The surface of the painting is super smooth. You can see the hand of the artist but it doesn’t feel overworked. It makes me think of Bridget Riley and her Op Art, but with more soul. Like she worked with math and Nowacki with intuition. In the end, it’s not about perfection but about the beauty of imperfection. That’s what makes art real, right?
