Here is a sheet of film by Robert Frank titled 'Pablo and old man--New York City 2'. I can imagine Robert Frank walking the streets of New York, camera in hand, always on the lookout. Each frame feels like a fleeting moment, like life unfolding right before his eyes. The composition is spontaneous. He captures the world as he finds it, unposed and unfiltered. There are high contrast black and whites, the graininess, the imperfections. It all adds to the raw, documentary feel. I see a kind of melancholy, too, a sense of isolation and longing. Yet, there's also a deep sense of humanity, an empathy for his subjects. Robert Frank reminds me that art isn't about perfection or beauty. It's about honesty, and about capturing a fleeting moment in time. He was in dialogue with the modernists, and he reminds me to be brave in my own way, to trust my instincts.
