This is a photo by Robert Frank, showing a series of frames from a roll of film, probably shot in New York. What grabs me is the way Frank reveals his process, leaving the filmstrip intact. You get a real sense of a moment captured over time, of someone working. The contrast between the black and white of the film gives the images a strong sense of immediacy. I’m drawn to the frame where a woman is covering her face, and the next frame, where she is smiling, as if to capture the nuances of human emotion. It feels like a film still, or a storyboard. It reminds me of Warhol’s use of repetition, yet it’s rawer. Frank’s work makes me think about the beauty of fleeting moments. There’s no one correct way of seeing; it’s more about openness and feeling.
