This address change form was filled out by Louis Cardinaals in 1933, using ink on pre-printed card. It’s got a delicious muted palette of off-white and purple! I can imagine Cardinaals holding this form, maybe at a desk or even propped against a wall, carefully filling out each section. The handwriting is so elegant, each letter a small gesture, a trace of his hand and mind. I wonder what he was thinking as he wrote. Maybe he was thinking about the relationship between language and image, between the concrete and the abstract. Or maybe he was just trying to make sure the mail got to the right place. The stamp in the top right corner is such a lovely detail, a little burst of geometric abstraction amidst all the text. It reminds me of the way artists like Kurt Schwitters incorporated found objects into their work, elevating the everyday to the level of art. It's a simple form with a lot of meaning packed into it. And like all good art, it invites us to slow down, look closely, and think deeply about the world around us.
