This 18th-19th century inrō, a traditional Japanese container for small items, was made by the artist Nomura Chōkei. Decorated in the intricate and detailed style of maki-e lacquerwork, the inrō depicts a grasshopper perched upon a stalk of flowering lily. The delicate gold and silver details and the overall black lacquer background create a striking contrast and highlight the beauty of the natural world. The inrō is currently housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
