Sean Scully's "Blue Fold" is a print of stacked horizontal bars in muted shades of black, orange, white and terracotta. I can imagine the act of layering, wiping away, and adjusting colors to create a sense of depth and texture. You know, making art can be a real wrestling match, right? I imagine Sean Scully in his studio, trying to get each color and form just right. He probably stepped back, squinted, and maybe even cursed a little, haha! The way the colors slightly bleed into one another makes me think of Rothko, but the stripes are more architectural, more like Agnes Martin. He’s creating a world of feeling through simple forms. It's so impressive, how these artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting, right?, it's a form of embodied expression which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations and meaning over fixed or definitive readings.
