Here’s a print by Jan Kubicek called Progressive System of Horizontals in a Square. The interaction of black and blue planes creates an optical rhythm; the hard-edged geometry feels both stable and dynamic. The surface of the print is smooth and gives a sense of precision. Look at the black lines between the color planes and the crispness of the edges; you can tell this piece was created with great care. The composition is balanced but not symmetrical, and the contrast between the colours feels very contemporary, like a Mondrian for the digital age! Kubicek is known for his systematic approach to artmaking, which resonates with other artists of his generation exploring seriality and geometric abstraction. This kind of systematic approach also reminds me of Agnes Martin's grids, but with a totally different sensibility, where the hand and gesture are still present. Ultimately this piece embodies the idea that art is an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas.
