Jan Kubicek made this print called ‘Progressive System of Horizontals in a Square’ with ink on paper, and it's an exercise in geometry and color, all neatly contained in a square. I think of the artist in their studio, carefully plotting out each line, each block of color, and I wonder what kind of mood they were in while making this, you know? The surface is smooth, the lines precise, and the colors, a cool blue and a solid black, are almost meditative in their simplicity. It reminds me a little of Sol Lewitt, but with a softer touch, almost like Agnes Martin's work too. See how the black and blue create a rhythm, almost like a musical score. Each line, each color block is a note. Artists are always responding to each other, riffing off ideas, and pushing the conversation forward. This piece isn’t just a static object but a point in an ongoing exchange, a contribution to the messy, beautiful dialogue that is art history.
