Fernand Léger conceived Project window (Audincourt) as a design for stained glass, though the date remains unknown. Léger lived through both World Wars, events that profoundly impacted his artistic vision. His experiences in the trenches during World War I led him to see beauty in machinery and the common worker, influencing his shift towards a more accessible, representational style. This work is characterized by bold lines and flat planes of color. Léger moves away from traditional representations and develops alternative narratives. The images of the rooster, plant and flame are emblems of the artist’s position on working-class identity. These windows create a space that reflects the vibrant energy of Audincourt, a town that has been shaped by industry and the working class. The artwork is emotionally and personally tied to a time of rebuilding, both physically and socially.
