This is Fernand Léger's 'Audincourt window,' now at the Musée National Fernand Léger. Léger, who lived through both World Wars, believed art should reflect and serve the masses. In this stained-glass design, we see Léger’s attempt to integrate modern art with everyday life, even within a religious context. Notice the non-traditional abstraction, where crosses blend into the background among biomorphic forms and industrial colors. The design was intended for a church in Audincourt which was built to heal the social divisions of postwar France. Léger once said, "I am for an art that is human." 'Audincourt window' embodies this sentiment by using a modern abstract language to address faith, reconciliation, and the collective human experience. It invites us to consider how sacred spaces can evolve to reflect contemporary society.
