This painting by Rene Portocarrero, titled Face, is a beautiful example of how paint can bring a face into being. I imagine the artist, brush in hand, building up layers of gold, blue, and grey, allowing the image to emerge through a process of trial, error, and intuition. What was Portocarrero thinking as he made this? I think the face comes into being as a play of forms and colors, creating a mask-like visage. It has this dream-like quality. The texture, color, and surface all contribute to the feeling of the painting. Notice the confident line defining the nose, the bold geometry of the head, and the decorative details of the composition! For me, this artwork is a reminder that artists are in ongoing conversation, sharing ideas across time and inspiring one another. Painting embraces ambiguity, inviting multiple interpretations and meanings.
