This gilded pier glass, whose maker and exact date remain a mystery, showcases the artistry of carving and gilding. Its wooden frame is brought to life with delicate foliage and latticework, all meticulously carved. But it’s the gilding that truly catches the eye. Applying gold leaf is a painstaking process, transforming the ordinary into something precious. Gold has always held a special allure. The frame would have been built up with layers of gesso before the gold leaf was laid down, creating a smooth surface. The burnishing process, polishing certain areas to a high shine, is what gives this mirror its radiant finish. Looking at this mirror, you might imagine the workshop where it was made. How many hands worked on it, and what were their stories? While we may not know their names, their skill lives on in this dazzling object, a reminder that even functional items can be elevated to the realm of art through craft.
