Nicholas Gorid, who lived between 1855 and 1995, made this drawing of a mirror, using brown ink, on paper. I can really feel the artist here, hunched over his desk with his pen. I bet he stopped a lot to refill it with ink. Look at that frame, the way those curves and swirls must have flowed out of him! I love that dark, rich brown he chose. It's earthy, you know? It reminds me of the forest, something deep and warm. The top of the mirror, with its little starburst and curlicues, feels so deliberate, each shape lovingly rendered. It must have taken a lot of patience, but the result is so beautiful. I'm thinking about the mirrors that I love, the ones that hang in my home, do they reflect light and space, or ideas? Artists are always in conversation, right? I'm wondering, how does this piece speak to you, and what does it reflect back?
