This monumental mirror sconce was made by Peter Rahm, a German sculptor who died in 1737. Its wooden core is overlaid with exquisitely carved and gilded gesso, a traditional material prized for its ability to mimic the appearance of solid gold when polished. The process of creating such a piece was highly labor-intensive, involving multiple artisans. Woodcarvers, gessoers, and gilders each contributed their specialized skills. The flowing, organic forms, typical of the Rococo style, demanded exceptional craftsmanship and a mastery of technique. The mirror itself, while visually recessive, was also a luxury product at the time. Think about the social context in which this object would have been displayed: softly illuminated by candlelight, reflecting and multiplying the elite gatherings of the day. This sconce embodies the convergence of art, craft, and social display, a potent symbol of wealth and status in its time.
