Camilla d'Errico made this work, Viseria, in the 21st century, probably with acrylics, and maybe some colored pencil. It looks like a fantasy illustration, and the color palette is muted, like faded tapestries. I love the way that d’Errico uses line. It’s delicate and precise. Look at the way she renders the dragon's scales and feathers with soft, gentle hatching. It reminds me of the attention given to detail by Japanese Manga artists, but there is also something otherworldly about it, like art nouveau. There's a sense of the artist being fully immersed in the creation, and that sense of immersion, or flow state, is vital to the making of art. There are so many painters that this work makes me think of, but one particular one is Yoshitomo Nara, both have a shared interest in cuteness and the portrayal of emotion in the form of cartoonish figures. What is certain, however, is that art is nothing if not a big conversation, a conversation that is still ongoing.
