Camilla d’Errico made this painting, Hearts Desire, with a smooth, controlled approach to oil paint that gives a luminous glow. It’s a real contrast: those drippy rose petals floating against a muted green background, framing the figure of a girl, really a child, but with knowing eyes and a peculiar sense of maturity. I’m struck by the color choices. The pastel pinks and blues against the dark green creates a feeling of tender melancholy. This is echoed in the texture too. The girl's skin and clothing are almost porcelain-like, while the rose petals and corkscrew curls have a slightly rougher surface. The bird on top of her head, surrounded by white roses, is the centerpiece, but there’s something about the little blue bow around her neck that speaks to me. It’s a tiny splash of color, but it’s also a moment of vulnerability. The whole piece is a bit like a modern-day Pre-Raphaelite painting, or even a Frida Kahlo self portrait. Ultimately, it’s the kind of painting that embraces open-endedness, inviting you to bring your own thoughts and feelings to the table.
