Roger Bissière made this yellow and black composition with, what looks like, layers of lithographic crayon. It's all soft and blurry, kind of like a dream. I bet Bissière was thinking about the way colors vibrate next to each other. The yellow is fighting to get out of the black, creating a push-and-pull effect that keeps your eye moving. I love the little pops of red, like tiny embers glowing in the dark. They feel so intentional, like he placed them just so to create a rhythm. This piece makes me think about other artists who were playing with color and texture, like the Nabis. There’s something poetic in how Bissière embraced ambiguity and uncertainty. For me, it feels like he's inviting us to bring our own stories and experiences to the painting. We’re all in conversation, right?
