Roger Bissière made this "Yellow and Black Composition" sometime during his career using printmaking techniques. Looking at this piece, I see a real emphasis on layering and texture. The dark areas feel built up, like sediment, against the paler, yellow marks that are dotted throughout. You can almost feel the grain of the stone, or whatever surface he used to make the print. There’s something really beautiful about the way these contrasting colors and textures play off each other. If you look closely at one of those clusters of red marks, you’ll see how they seem to hover on the surface, like little sparks or drops of blood. That combination of yellow and red is really striking, a kind of warm, almost feverish glow against the cool darkness. Bissière's work reminds me of Paul Klee, he similarly explores how simple shapes and colors can create these really complex, evocative spaces, full of mood and feeling.
