Arnoud Schaepkens created this print, titled 'Krijgsman en zijn paard', or 'Warrior and his horse' in Dutch, using etching. Schaepkens lived through a time of significant social and political change in Europe, including the rise of nationalism and various revolutionary movements. During the 19th century, historical and military subjects became popular themes in art as a way to evoke feelings of national pride. Here, the artist depicts an armed warrior standing beside his horse against the backdrop of a fortified city, possibly reflecting 19th century interests in militarism. The warrior’s gender and social status immediately signal power and authority, while the inclusion of the horse could symbolize nobility and strength. The print invites us to contemplate how masculinity is constructed through symbols of war and power. It encourages a critical reflection on how historical narratives are shaped and who gets to be a part of them.
