Harrie Gerritz made this print, "Oranje toren in groen veld," or "Orange tower in green field," presumably with a carved block and some ink. What I like about prints is the way they embrace repetition and allow for slight variations in colour and texture, like accidental beauty marks. I can imagine Gerritz carefully carving away at the block, making the green frame, the orange tower, and then the field of green stripes, each line with its own pulse. I wonder what Gerritz was thinking about when he was making this? I see something of Milton Avery in his use of colour and geometric forms, but I also notice the playfulness of someone like Joan Miró, who's trying to make the ordinary somehow magical. Did they influence him? In the end, we all find our own way of doing things, discovering our own language as artists. I know that I certainly have.
