Harrie Gerritz created this abstract print, “De nieuwe dag na een storm,” which translates as “The New Day After a Storm,” using various printmaking techniques. I wonder, was Gerritz thinking about the relationship between destruction and renewal? The image, in its contrasting zones of color, feels almost like a stage set. At the top, a gray sky tinged with a hopeful yellow; below that, an ambiguous pink ring. My eyes are drawn to the black skeletal form in the middle. It’s hard to tell what it is. Is it the remains of something broken, or the beginning of something new? The vibrant green base, punctuated by dashes of red, gives a sense of hope amidst the wreckage. Gerritz’s approach reminds me of artists like Elizabeth Murray, who created layered, spatial compositions. Ultimately, this print speaks to the cyclical nature of life, inviting us to find beauty and possibility even in the aftermath of a storm.
