This chromolithograph of Alexander III, Czar of Russia, was printed by W. Duke, Sons & Co. as part of their Rulers, Flags, and Coats of Arms series. Notice how the print is divided into three distinct vertical panels, each presenting a different aspect of Russian imperial identity. On the left is the coat of arms, centered is a portrait of Alexander III himself, and on the right is the Imperial flag and pennant set against a winter scene. Each panel offers a set of visual signs designed to signify power and legitimacy. The composition directs our gaze from symbol to face to symbol, creating a loop of meaning that reinforces the Czar’s authority. The rich colors, precise lines, and the symmetrical arrangement of elements within each panel contribute to a sense of order. It's a celebration of imperial power that uses visual language to establish and communicate its message.
