Master HCB made this engraving, "Venus and Mars with Cupid and the Three Graces," sometime in the late 16th or early 17th century, probably in the Netherlands. It depicts a scene of classical gods and personifications. Given his familiarity with mythological subjects, we can assume HCB was well-versed in classical literature, a common attribute of artists working under the patronage of the educated elite. Prints such as this one were often made after paintings or frescoes and played an important role in disseminating visual ideas across Europe. This print appears to comment on social structures of its time through its revival of classical themes. Was HCB consciously endorsing or critiquing those structures? Historians look at the visual codes, cultural references, and historical associations to discern meaning in art like this. The social conditions, institutional settings, and political and economic structures shape artistic production. Through this research, we can reveal the power of art to challenge existing social norms.
