Noguchi's ‘Mirage’ is a kind of sculptural haiku – a pairing of very different materials into a single, unified form, like a poem. He’s using wood and stone, and then a glass bubble, like a dewdrop, or some kind of strange growth on the table's surface. I can imagine Noguchi in his studio, playing with each element, trying out different combinations until something clicks. It feels like a kind of call and response, each element reacting to the other. I’m particularly drawn to that smooth, dark stone on the tabletop, almost like it’s been carved and polished by water over centuries. In my own work, I often try to find ways to balance roughness with refinement, control with accident. And Noguchi seems to be doing something similar here, letting the materials speak for themselves while also shaping them into something new. It is all about relationships - just like life.
