This page, number 56r from Johann Sibmacher’s "Newes Modelbuch in Kupffer," presents a series of intricate patterns rendered in ink. These designs, intended as models for artisans, are rich with geometric forms and floral motifs, bearing witness to the symbolic language of the Renaissance. Note the recurring wheel, or rosette, a symbol of the cosmos and cyclical time. We find echoes of it even in ancient Crete, in Minoan labyrinths, a sun-like image suggesting not only celestial harmony but also serving as a representation of power. This symbol’s recurrence across centuries speaks to our shared, subconscious recognition of its primal power. It reappears in Gothic rose windows, and in Islamic art. Each iteration, while aesthetically distinct, taps into the wheel’s core significance: a continuous, non-linear, cyclical progression. It resurfaces, evolves, and takes on new meanings, always engaging viewers on a deep, almost subconscious level.
