Here are two design sketches for the hall of a palace, made by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena in pen and brown ink, dating back to the 18th century. Bibiena, born into a family of artists, became one of the most celebrated stage designers of his time, known for his elaborate theatrical sets and architectural fantasies. These sketches give us a glimpse into the world of power and privilege, and the identity that was expressed through architectural design. The sketches suggest a world of grandeur and spectacle, where wealth and status were celebrated through art and architecture. The precise lines and attention to detail give a sense of order and control which served to reinforce the power of the elite. Consider the stories that these walls would have witnessed. They're a reminder of the social structures of the time, and also a testament to human creativity and the desire to make our mark on the world.
