Robert Frank made this contact sheet, Circus, Palisades 1, from gelatin silver, giving us a peek into his raw photographic process. It's a way of seeing that's both intimate and analytical. The grainy blacks and whites aren't just about aesthetics; they're about immediacy. Look at the repetition, the car windows, the blurred faces in the crowd. Frank isn't hiding the process; he's showing us the thinking behind the shots. The image, a frame of dark shadow, is a blot of pure uncertainty. It reminds me of some of Moholy-Nagy's photograms, where chance and experimentation ruled. Both artists use the medium to explore the edge of representation, and that’s where things get interesting.
