This photographic film strip, titled "Mary's sculpture no number" was made by Robert Frank sometime during his career. I love how Frank lets us see the whole process here, not just the polished result. It’s like getting a peek behind the curtain. The frames are raw, unedited, each a small step in the dance between Frank and his subject. Look closely and you can see him circling his subject from different angles, playing with light and shadow, trying to capture something essential. There is a real intimacy in these frames. They offer a glimpse into Frank’s way of seeing the world. It reminds me a little of Walker Evans' documentary approach, but with a more personal, almost diaristic feel. Ultimately, it's about embracing the messiness of seeing and feeling, much like life itself.
